Illustration of an extinct member of the genus Simocyon up a tree in Spain during the late Miocene epoch (c.11.6 to 5.3 million years ago). This genus belonged to the family Ailuridae, of which only red pandas (Ailurus fulgens) still survive. Fossils of this genus have been found in Europe, Asia and, more rarely, in North America and Africa.
