Syrtis Major is a distinct dark marking on the Martian surface, also about 1,000 kilometres across. Initially, it was thought to be a plain, but later data revealed that it is actually a broad topographic rise. The dark colour of Syrtis Major comes from the basaltic volcanic rock in the region and the relatively low amount of dust present.
