Nellie Stewart - (1858-1931). Born into an acting family in Sydney. Nellie, a versatile actress, was admired by theatre-goers for more than 50 years. A soprano and the grandchild of famous thespians Mary and Richard Yates, she hit the limelight at the age of three in the Stranger under her father's management. She played leading roles in many comic operas and was so devoted to her calling that once, having broken her arm during a stage accident, she had it set during interval and successfully completed the performance. Nellie was forced to change to drama when she damaged her voice as the result of an exceptionally long run. January 18, 1937.
