She was taught drawing by the London artist John Varley. Sketching ability was considered to be an important social skill for young upper-class ladies. She painted this watercolour view from sketches made during a tour of the Highlands of Scotland with her brother in 1826. Scottish landscape became popular after the Picturesque style of wild, rugged landscape views became established in the late-18th century. Lady Mary later married Sir Charles Monck of Belsay Hall, Northumberland.); Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums.
