It was during his last days in England before his glorious death at Trafalgar, that Nelson met the future Duke of Wellington, then Sir Arthur Wellesley, in the waiting-room at the Colonial Office. The latter has left an account of the meeting. "Lord Nelson could not know who I was, but he entered at once into conversation with me . . . he talked of the state of the country, and of the aspect and probabilities of affairs on the Continent, with a good sense and a knowledge of subjects both at home and abroad that surprised me . . . in fact he talked like an officer and a statesman."
