LARGE SILVER TANKARD WITH DEPICTIONS OF EMPEROR LEOPOLD I.

Silver with part and interior gilding. On flat rim domed base with leaf and fruit relief. On the cylindric side four medallions with the portrait of Emperor Leopold I with laurel wreath and the circumscription 'LEO POLDVS'; in between fruit wreaths. The flattened hinged lid with matching medallion and the scroll handle with fork-shaped thumbpiece. Ca. 760g. Height 18cm.

Inspection mark Leipzig (Rosenberg no.2995); year letter only very faint; maybe Q for 1692/94; maker's mark; slightly worn; Joachim Krumpholtz (since 1669; ibid. no.3054). Condition B/C.

Provenance:
Lower Rhine private collection.

The medallions with a portrait in profile of Emperor Leopold I. (1657-1705) match his depictions on coins during his regency.Art trade; Van Ham.
