NETSUKE: JO AND UBA; IVORY.
19th century.

The old couple Jo and Uba with rake and broom under an umbrella-shaped pine tree near the beach of Takasago; verso a pair of cranes. They are standing on a flat base; framed with Sasa-bamboo; with four short; curved feet. Among those is posed a twig of blooming plum; bearing the signature on the stem: Kaigyoku Masatsugu; according to LA; p. 557-64; under Kaigyokusai Masatsugu; Osaka. He is one of the most renowned Netsuke carvers of Japan and this is a piece from his earliest period. The combination 'Sho-chiku-bai' (pine tree; bamboo and plum) symbolizes the three friends of the winter. Very meticulously carved and engraved; with some colouring. H. 3;4 cm. Condition A.
