Chongqing is a huge city and bustling river port in central China where the Jialingjiang merges with the mighty Yangtze River. Chongqing grew on a steep sided hilly peninsula between both rivers - today the district known as Yuzhong. The steepness of the terrain meant many porters were employed; using bamboo poles and ropes; to carry heavy loads up from the river to the main urban area. The porters were known as 鈥楤ang-Bang'. With rapid modernisation; today only a few still operate in Chongqing.
