Gauguin's Chair is a painting created in 1888 by Vincent van Gogh in anticipation of the arrival of his friend, Paul Gauguin at van Gogh's ???ellow House??in Arles, Southern France. This is one of the pair of chairs painted by van Gogh. Gauguin's chair shows two books and a lit candle discarded on an ornate armchair. The painting of Van Gogh??? Chair depicts only a tobacco pipe and pouch on a rustic wooden chair, indicating, it is believed, van Gogh's respect for Gauguin. In reality, van Gogh's brother Theo, a Dutch art dealer, was more important to Gauguin than Vincent. The intense and turbulent friendship between Van Gogh and Gauguin lasted only 63 days. Gauguin wan his friend and mentor.
