This is one of the pair of chairs painted by van Gogh. Gauguin's chair shows two books and a lit candle discarded on an ornate armchair. The painting of Van Gogh??? Chair depicts only a tobacco pipe and pouch on a rustic wooden chair, indicating, it is believed, van Gogh's respect for Gauguin. In reality, van Gogh's brother Theo, a Dutch art dealer, was more important to Gauguin than Vincent. The intense and turbulent friendship between Van Gogh and Gauguin lasted only 63 days.
