They stayed behind in Bitburg -- These German nurses decided allied captivity was more inviting than German retreat. They were found by American who entered the devastated city of Bitburg, Germany. The important road centre of Bitburg has fallen to troops of the third U.S. Army. On entering the city already abandoned by the enemy American infantrymen found only 200 civilians remaining in the town, together with a few German nurses. June 4, 1945.
