Really a mine lamp -- BOAC Hostess Joan Henderson with the lamp. The brass and pewter Olympic "air" torch for the 1956 Games in Melbourne arrived today by BOAC Constellation. The torch was transferred to a TAA plane for Melbourne. It was presented by the Olympic Committee of the Saar, in Germany. The torch is actually a German miner's safety lamp. It is about 11 inches high, weighs 41b and can be carried safely in an aircraft cabin. The lamp will be used to kindle the runners' torch in Cairns in 1956. Australian Olympic Federation chairman Harry Alderson said, "The lamp which has, until now, been in use in Saar mines, is a gift to the federation and has been sent here for inspection.
