The Pope's "Beloved Son" - Cardinal Griffins, Archbishop of Westminster, leaving Westminster Cathedral, London, after Pontifical High Mass which followed the Cardinal a reception as Papal Legate of Pope Pius XII to the congress being held to mark the centenary of the restoration to England and Wales of the Roman Catholic Hierarchy. In his letter of appointment, to "his beloved Son", the Pope said; "Your country was once called and with good reason, an island that nurtured saints. From earliest times it has produced many noble champions who upheld the claims of Catholic doctrine, Catholic unity. May their example inspire you". September 29, 1950.
