This in 1833, was described in Woods\' Plan as the \'Record Office\' - next, when the Court House was removed from the Red Pier to Athol St. and the old \'Black Hole\' beneath the Pier Court House was devoted to other uses, this house became the Police Station, with a \'black hole\' at the rear, under St. B. Square, to hold delinquents overnight, prior to a trip to Castle Rushen next day. Later, of course, it was the Commissioners\' Office (private house) then, rebuilt - single storey, then double storey, then Customs with entry to Fort St., as I think it had in the Commissioners\' later days. In this view behind the ladder are two gate pillars, the space between walled up. This was the Commissioners\' way in when the building was a single storey.
