1213604 Newcastle upon Tyne in the Reign of Queen Elizabeth (w/c on board) by Storey, John (1828-88); 131.0 x77.0 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: John Storey\'s imaginative reconstruction of Newcastle in the 1550s shows how the city was built on several hills. The deep denes were gradually filled in later. The city is protected by its walls and three towers on the old Tyne Bridge. Pilgrim Street (running vertically, right of centre) was the most important route through the city. Storey was still able to see many of the ancient quayside buildings when he painted this picture in 1852. However, most were destroyed two years later in a great fire.); 穢 Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums; British, out of copyright.
