The Windscale Piles with their two chimneys, a pair of graphite-moderated nuclear reactors, were used for the production of plutonium for the British H bomb programme. Pile 1 ( the nearest on the left) caught fire in 1957 releasing a cloud of radioactive fallout, the worst nuclear accident in British history. Also in view: Windscale Advanced Gas Cooled Reactor (WAGR). Both chimneys are now partially demolished. Photographed at night, Sellafield, Cumbria, UK, 1998.
