Philip John Stephen Dadd (1880-1916), artist and illustrator. Dadd was born in Poplar, East London, the son of a marine engineer. The artist Kate Greenaway was his aunt. Dadd had a successful career as an artist, exhibited at the Royal Academy and contributed regularly to popular magazines such as the Pears Annual and The Sphere. Dadd joined the Queen's Westminster Rifles in December 1915 and went to France where he continued to draw and illustrate for The Sphere. A sensitive and artistic personality, he was very much appreciative of nature and his environment as his letters from the front to home testify. Dadd was killed on 2 August 1916. This self-portrait is taken from his obituary published in The Sphere.
