'The Rev. John Russell', 1879. John ('Jack') Russell (1795-1883) was the vicar of Swimbridge and rector of Black Torrington in North Devon. Known as 'The Sporting Parson', Russell was a fox-hunter and dog breeder who developed the Jack Russell Terrier, a variety of the Fox Terrier breed.
