Gamma ray bursters are the most powerful explosions in the universe and are frequently observed in distant galaxies. They are thought to be the result of a supergiant star exploding and sometimes two neutron stars merging, though other explanations exist. In a few seconds a gamma ray burster can produce more energy than our sun will in its entire nine billion year lifetime.
