Combustion, photo 1. For a combustion reaction to occur, an oxidant is needed. In this series a candle burns steadily in the open air using oxygen for combustion (Photo 1). When the candle is covered with an upside-down glass, the flame intensity starts to diminish (Photo 2) until it completely dies as the oxygen inside the glass is used up (Photo 3).
