Common Witch-hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is found in mixed hardwood forests, on rocky slopes, and along trail sides of North America. It flowers late October to early December and is pollinated by the Winter Moth. It's fruit becomes dormant for the winter and develops over the following growth season, maturing in the Fall. Witch hazel was widely used for medicinal purposes by Native Americans and it continues to be used as an astringent worldwide.
