Skunk cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus) growing in the snow in New Jersey. This plant is among the season's first to bloom. It produces heat in order to melt surrounding snow and ice. Skunk cabbage gets its name from the skunk-like smell that it releases when it is damaged.
