Color enhanced Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of surface mucous cells from a guinea pig's stomach. Such cells have large granules of varying shape. Their pleomorphism suggests that they have a malleable semisolid content, for fluid filled vesicles would be spherical or, if closely packed, polygonal. This degree of osmiophilia is unusual in a product rich in carbohydrate.
