Woodcut of the "Florida Bull" from Des Monstres et prodiges by Ambroise Par矇, 1573. Des Monstres is filled with unsubstantiated accounts of sea devils, marine sows, and monstrous animals with human faces. With its extensive discussion of reproduction and illustrations of birth defects, the book invited accusations of pornography. " In Florida large bulls are found that the savages call Butrol, which have horns only one foot long, having on their back a tumor or hump like a camel, their hair long above the back, of a dun color, their tail like that of a Lion. This animal is among the most ferocious known, because of which it never lets itself be tamed, unless it is stolen and ripped when younger from its mother. The savages use its skins against the cold; and its horns are much prized, on account of the property they have against venom."
