Desert garden near Persepolis, Iran, irrigated by qanats. Qanats, an Iranian invention from the 2nd millenium BC, are horizontal wells - collecting and transporting water under its own gravity sometimes from very far away to points of usage. Their excavation, ventilation, maintenance and inspection shafts dot the surface of the Iranian plateau.
