Dead fish in the Hudson River (circa 1975). The Hudson was host to significant industrial and chemical pollution from factories built along its banks from the 1850s through the 1970s. Since this picture was taken in 1975, significant strides have been made to clean up the river so that it was declared safe for swimming by 1999.
