SAN PIETRO TO MARTINIQUE view of the Gulf. Capital of the French overseas; was named for its elegance; "the Paris of the West Indies." In 1902 it was destroyed by the eruption of the nearby Mont Pelee; and was therefore replaced in the role of capital from Fort-de-France.
