27 people were killed and 3 injured when the No. 1 prototype of the semisecret de Havilland 110 all-weather jet fighter blew up at the Farnborough, Hampshire air show today (Saturday). The dead included pilot John Derry and his observer. Many of the spectators who were killed or injured were on a hillside struck by a burning engine. The aircraft disintegrated after crashing through the sound barrier at more than 700 miles an hour in an 8 miles dive. Senior Royal Air Force officers conferring by part of the engine from the plane as it lies this evening on the hillside where the spectators were killed and injured. Further up the hill on left is a shallow crater made by the engine. Around the scene is drawn a tight RAF cordon. [Transport, aviation, accident, disaster, tragedy, aeroplane] 6 September 1952
