The ancient Midsummer Day ceremony of electing City Sheriffs was conducted today by the Liverymen of the city of London assembled in Common Hall at Guildhall. The Lord Mayor, the Alderman and high officers of the City were appropriately clad in their full robes of office, and carried, in accordance with centuries old tradition, posies of English Flowers. Sweet herbs stewn on the hustings at the ceremony are also a relic of the picturesque City ceremonies of more spacious days. 24 June 1947
