The block of buildings, part of Winchester College, Britain's oldest public school. Were seriously damaged when fire broke out in the early hours of this morning. The buildings, which compromise masters common rooms, studies and prefects rooms, were built in 1870. The most ancient college property nearby, including the famous chapel, were saved from damage by 3 NFS Brigades who came from Winchester, Eastleigh and Southampton. The roof of the 2nd story had fallen in before the first firemen reached the colleges in answer to the core of headmaster Mr W Oakeshott, he discovered the outbreak.
