An eggshell carved by Mr Henry C Mahoney is the rarest and most fragile wedding present to be offered to the Duke of Kent and Princess Marina - it is only the fourth to be carved - the others having been presented to King George together with the late Andrew Carnegie and King Alphonso - Mr Mahoney carved the egg while a war prisoner in Ruhleben Camp - it shows underneath he Crown the objects with which prisoners were most fdamiliar - they are two rats rampant / a piece of German sausage couchant / a hunk of black bread and a soup tin - the tool with which the engraving was done was sent out from England hidden in a loaf of bread by Mr Mahoney's wife - the engraving has 5,000 cuts and took three weeks - photo shows the carved eggshell October 27th 1934
