Four thousand working-class families barricaded themselves in the citie Jeanne d'Arc ( a block of flats on the south side of the Seine in Paris ) and attacked the police with paving stones and burning wood and volleys of revolver shot - a policeman was seriously wounded by the rioters' shots - eventually more than two thousand police and mobile guards had to be called - in the alleys leading into their homes the besieged lit huge fires behind their barricades and furniture together with doors and window frames were used as fuel - the building was eventually captured by police - photo shows police and road workers repairing damage caused during the fighting at the cite Jeanne d'Arc May 2nd 1933
