Londonderry: Northern Ireland: Police in riot helmets, and gas masks, carry their riot shields, as they walk along a road with a milk crate full of molotov cocktails from the Roman Catholic Bogside area where they were found today, during the morning riots. To nights police were fighting their way house to house into the Catholic Bogside District. And, as the battle ages, British troops are standing by on the outskirts ready to move in if the civil authorities ask for help. The riot was sparked off by an apprentice boys parade by 15,000 protestants yesterday, to mark the anniversary of the siege of Derry in 1689. At least 280 people have been injured, more than a hundreds of them police, in more than 18 hours of street fighting. 13 August 1969
