Salisbury, Rhodesia: The slogans "Rhodesians, show your spirit" and "sweets for the orphans in South Africa" painted on the windows of his shop was the way Salisbury shop owner Mr J Plagis appealed to Rhodesians for contributions in his campaign for "sweets for the orphans". Mr Plagis started his campaign following the recent arrival in the Rhodesian capital of a gift drum of petrol from South African orphans. The drum was towed the 700 miles to Salisbury behind a motor scooter ridden by mr P Geldenhuys. By the time Mr Plagis' campaign as five hours old, two tons of sweets and GBP400 cash had been collected. Mr Plagis is a former battle of Britain pilot. 14th March 1966
