Sending huge breakers crashing through the defences and wrecking several cottages, the Atlantic has opened a new phase of the centuries-old battle for the fishing village in Amroth on the Pembrokeshire coast of Wales. 12 of the 200 inhabitants have lost their homes and the rest are racing time to build up the defences against the high tide expected this weekend. The villagers have arranged an all-night watch, as they fear that if the sea breaks through this time, the whole village will be wiped out.
