Ken Waller Pilots " Old Crock " Of The Air From Brussels to Brooklands in Four Hours Forty Minutes - Britain ' s Oldest Machine . Mr Ken Waller , who with Owen Cathcart - Jones made a record round flight between London and Melbourne went to the other extreme when he flew a 1911 Caudron machine fitted with its original engine , from Brussels to Brooklands Aerodrome . In the face of a 40 miles an hour wind , Waller fought his way from Brussels in 4 hours 40 minutes , which is about four times as long as Waller and Cathcart - Jones took in their D . H . Comet machine when returning from Australia in 1934 . The ancient Caudron plane has been bought by Brooklands Aviation , with whom Ken Waller is an instructor . He will fly the machine , believed to be th eoldest now used in Britain , at the opening of the new Brighton Airport . Photo shows : Ken Waller in the cockpit of the Caudron at Lympne , where he made a stop on his way to Brooklands . 21 May 1936 *** Local Caption ***
