The annual visit of the scholars of Christ 's Hospital to the City of London took place with the annual St Matthews Day ceremonial , when the scholars arrived in London for the church service at Christ Church , Newgate , which was attended by the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs in state . Afterwards the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress entertained the scholars at the Mansion House .
