Tsiolkovsky's funeral. Crowds assembled in Kaluga, Russia, to witness the funeral of Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky (1857-1935). Tsiolkovsky was a pioneer of aviation and aerospace design. He was one of the first to use open-section wind tunnels, those in which the test object is in free air and not a constricted tube. Tsiolkovsky laid many of the foundations of modern aerodynamics including finding the drag coefficients of flat plates, cylinders and spheres.
