In the background Hervieu is at work at am immense easle making a sketch for which Henry Trollope is an unattractive model. Since Mrs Trollope was determined to let Americans see themselves as they appeared to the travellers, it was only to be expected that an American artist in turn would show her the Trollopes as some Americans saw them
