The ritual of the penny hedge, as enacted at Whitby in North Yorkshire, shown in a 19th century photograph. The ritual is supposed to go back to 1159 but its meaning and history are confused. The man on the left is blowing a horn, and the one with the hammer is building a symbolic wall.
