Melnik (M?ln韐); Czech Republic; skulls in charnel house; detail from wall of bones. In a crypt under the church of Sts. Peter and Paul; the charnel contains the remains of an estimated 15000 people. Its current form is the result of a restoration by anthropologist Jindrich Matiegka in 1914. The bones used to create the display had been left here when the crypt was sealed due to a hygiene ordinance in 1787. Photo 2010.
