ATHENS ; GREECE; 1; MAY-2010 MAY DAY DEMONSTRATIONS The public mood has been reflected in a Greek newspaper poll; which said more than 50 per cent of the population is prepared to go out onto the streets to be able to protest if the austerity measures are too bad. Another poll found 80 per cent were against cuts in private sector wages but 50.6 per cent considered a lifeline from the EU and IMF necessary. That poll; conducted for the To Vima pro-government newspaper; found that 62 per cent were against recent union-organised protests. Greek union leaders have called a nationwide general strike Wednesday against a new round of budget cuts hitting the public sector particularly hard. 鈥業t's the biggest attack on workers for centuries. They want to return us to the 19th century. This is not going to be a battle but a war that will last for months or even years.
