Spiral formations, as part of the amuletic magical protection symbolism, on Hmong Patch, from Laos. The patches are delicately worked, and are preserved when a smock or coat wears out, to be sewn on to the replacement garment. The four sprial forms almost certainly represent the four directions of space, meeting at a symbol which represents the fifth direction.
