SYMBOLS - EMBLEM - WORLD Emblem in honour of Sir Francis Drake, the English seaman, who, in 1580, sailed round the world. The Latin inscription, Auxilio Divino means 'By Divine Help'. In the poem, Drake is visualized as another Jason, taking home to England the Golden Fleece of his achievements. Jason and his men were however enchanted by Medea, while Drake was not - his achievement was all the more remarkable. From Geoffrey Whitney, A Choice of Emblems, 1586.
