DEMONS - SYMBOLS - ANCHOR A demon threatening the life of a seaman, whose vessel has been caught in a storm (perhaps raised by the demon). The text points to he fact that the mortal life may be compared to a ship on a sea or river, with all the uncertainties attached to this. The sailor would desire to find his way to port, rather than become rich. God, in his star-filled heaven, seems to be looking on in a protective way, however. In His hand he carries the orb of power - the globe with a horizontal line, and half a vertical, topped by a cross. The anchor is yet another symbol of hope, for it represented (at least to the mediaeval mind) the security offered by Christ. Woodcut from the Nicholas de Rouge printing (at Troyes) of Grand Kalendrier et Compost des Bergers, circa 1490.
