X-10 Graphite Reactor. Workers inside the X-10 Graphite Reactor, the world's first reactor designed and built for continuous operation. This reactor went into operation in 1943, at what is now the Atomic Energy Commission's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennessee, USA. It was commissioned as part of the Manhattan Project, the US nuclear weapons development program during World War II.
