Total solar eclipse, diamond ring. Total solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun. Just before and after totality, the edge of the solar disc peeps out from the rim of the Moon, creating this effect known as a 'diamond ring'. Photographed onboard a ship near Iwo Jima island, Pacific Ocean, in July 2009.
