Quantum computer research. Computing equipment being used in experiments on quantum computing and quantum memory experiments. Such experiments include the use of traces of rare earth elements in crystals. Selective laser excitation in the crystal permits high accuracy operations on groups of single ions (qubits). The interaction between neighbouring ions in the host crystal allow implementation of quantum gates.
