Light microscopy of the cerebellum which is located below and behind the cerebral hemispheres (the forebrain). Anatomically the cerebellum has two hemispheres and developmentally it belongs to the hindbrain. The surface (cortex) of the cerebellum consists of highly folded grey matter (outer yellow and black) formed into folia that resemble leaves with branches. Each folium contains many neurons (some seen as fine black parallel processes) the total number exceeding those found in the cerebrum. The core of folia has white matter (stained brown) extending deep and attached to the brainstem. The cerebellum coordinates movement, posture, and equilibrium. Magnification x30 when width printed at 10 cm.
