Fungal meningitis research. Image showing a test to determine the susceptibility of the Exserohilum rostratum fungus to the antifungal drug amphotericin B. The drug inhibited growth of the fungal organism in the clear area where the amphotericin B had diffused into the medium, whilst the fungus continued to grow elsewhere on the plate, where the drug had not diffused into the medium. In October 2012, this fungus was identified by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as the pathogen responsible for almost all cases and fatalities in the New England Compounding Center meningitis outbreak, which by 3rd November 2012 had resulted in 40MB4 cases with 29 fatalities. Photographed at the CDC, USA, during the 2012 multistate fungal meningitis
