Lumbar puncture being performed. Cerebrospinal fluid is withdrawn by means of a hollow needle inserted into the subarachnoid space in the region of the lower back, usually between the third and fourth lumbar vertebrae. The cerebro-spinal fluid is examined for diagnostic purposes. In this case the normally clear fluid is stained red by blood from an intra-cranial haemorrhage.
